Why MCP Might Be the Most Important AI Update Since ChatGPT

Welcome back to the world of AI Agents & The Solopreneur—where the realms of innovation never cease to surprise us.
Today, we dive into the latest buzzword that's captivating tech communities globally—Model Context Protocol (MCP). Like many “futuristic tools”, everyone's talking about it, but what is MCP, really?
Understanding MCP: The Unified Language of AI Services
Imagine going on a trip to a new place where no one speaks your language. You try to ask questions using hand signals and gestures. It might be fun at first, but if you really need to ask something important, like "Where's the bathroom?" it can get frustrating fast.

Now imagine that everyone you meet suddenly speaks your language—and you speak theirs. Everything gets easier. This is actually the promise of MCP - a protocol that acts as a universal translator for AI agents when they interact with external services and tools.
What happened?
Anthropic first launched MCP on November 25th, 2024. In the world of AI thats a looooong time ago. It was picked up then by people who saw the potential. But actually not many did. And for a protocol to become some kind of standard you need lots of them to jump aboard.
And guess what just recently happened: OpenAI’s Sam Altman announced that OpenAI will support MCP. Now we have the top AI models by active users agreeing on a standard for how to communicate with other systems and apps. 🤯
people love MCP and we are excited to add support across our products.
available today in the agents SDK and support for chatgpt desktop app + responses api coming soon!

Why this is a Big Deal
To see why this is actually so exciting let’s first have a look on how MCP is different from other tools like Zapier, Make or n8n:
Those workflow automation builders help connect apps too. But we often need a lot of setup for every new tool. And for every tool we mostly need to define every single action in one separate step.
MCP works more like a smart hub. It connects to one tool and knows all the actions that can be done with it. And once it understands a type of tool, it can connect to many others like it without repeating all the work. This saves time and keeps things simple—especially helpful for small business owners who use a lot of different tools.
Before MCP, making an AI talk to different tools could be messy and slow. Each tool had its own rules and setup. MCP makes everything smoother and easier to connect. Instead of building custom setups for each tool, you use one system that understands them all.
How MCP Works - The main parts:
The MCP Client helps pass along the information between the AI and the outside world in a clean and clear way. It can e.g. sit inside tools like n8n.
The MCP Protocol is the language that all parts use to talk to each other.
The MCP Server is the powerhouse. It takes what the AI wants to do and turns it into real actions, like sending a message or checking a calendar.
Finally, the External Service is where the request ends up—like a database, email tool, or customer system.

By the way: Isn’t this ChatGPT created infographic crazy? So good.
This is good because :
Easier to connect things: You won't have to set up each connection separately anymore.
AI becomes more capable: Because it can easily access more tools and services.
More reliable: The way the AI talks to services becomes more standardized, which can lead to fewer errors.
Safer: MCP adds a layer between the AI and the actual tools, which can help prevent security problems.
Why MCP Might Be the Most Important AI Update Since ChatGPT
Because it gives AI a common language to interact with tools, apps, and systems—like a universal translator for machines. Instead of manually connecting every tool one by one, MCP makes these connections smoother, faster, and more flexible. It’s a huge step toward AI that doesn’t just talk—but does real work across platforms.
Soon, MCP might be able to talk to even bigger tools and companies like Microsoft and Salesforce. The idea is to build even smarter systems that can do more things on their own. These smart connections will help people and businesses work faster and better.
We’re still early with AI Agents and even earlier with MCP. But if you’re curious about the future of AI and automation, MCP is something to watch. Don’t be afraid to test it out or follow its progress. Play with these internal capabilities even if widespread adoption seems distant. It might just help you do more with less effort.
